MARCH 14TH CROP REPORT
The quality looks excellent and supplies are in great shape. Texas has roughly 5,000ac of onions this season, slightly less than the year prior. Some shippers have started harvesting, but volume will be light for the next 14-20 days and primarily retailer-focused with Jumbo & Medium-sized Tx1015 Sweet Onions. More shippers will come online as we approach St. Patrick’s Day and by April, expect load volume on all sizes and colors.
APRIL 7TH CROP REPORT
The weather has cooperated very well over the last few weeks. Lots of warm days with a constant breeze and as a result harvest is good and strong. Our current production is yielding strong numbers, hitting marks in all sizes with excellent quality. You can expect good volume to fulfill orders, including a promotable volume on all sizes (especially Sweets and Yellows) for the next 2-3 months.
A friendly reminder – Onions do NOT have to be flat to be MILD!
MAY 3RD CROP REPORT
Rio Grande Valley – Volume is good and production is steady across the region. All varieties are available, and sizing is running heaviest to Jumbos. Mediums and smaller have hit some pockets of limited availability, so be sure to provide advance notice when working with shippers to confirm ample supplies.
Uvalde-Winter Garden Region – Cooler temps through early April slowed early production, but the northern districts will start shipping light supplies by May 1st. Expect volume to be heavy to Sweets and Yellows, with Reds and Whites in small quantities until mid to late May. Overall, acreage is slightly down but yields look to be above average.
MAY 27TH CROP REPORT
Rio Grande Valley – The season is wrapping up, with much of the harvest expected to be completed by the end of May. Quality remains great, thanks to warm days and lots of wind. Sizing is running heavy to Jumbos, followed by Colossals.
Uvalde-Winter Garden Region – This part of Texas is kicking off their peak season as harvest is wide open. Texas 1015 Sweets and Yellows are looking great and more Reds and Whites are becoming available. Quality has been fantastic, skin set looks incredible, and sizing has been really good – again, mostly Jumbos. As Memorial Day and the other summer holidays begin approaching, consider these regions for promotional opportunities as volume will be plentiful into the first part of July.
